South Essex Sewerage District (SESD) needed a solution to the frequent odor complaints resulting from its 40-million-gallon-per-day primary wastewater treatment facility, a plant in proximity to a residential community. To alleviate these odor challenges and obtain zero-tolerance odor control far surpassing regulatory limits, CDM designed and managed the construction of a completely covered secondary treatment facility with state-of-the-art, multi-staged odor control systems.
The plant-wide ventilation system was designed to minimize the escape of odors from the buildings, which was particularly challenging as one building had 40 separate ventilation zones. CDM incorporated chemical scrubbing and activated carbon adsorption with dispersion stacks to maximize the degree of atmospheric dispersion of the treated exhausts. With the design implemented, the SESD treatment facility's odor concerns are eliminated and the plant has become a good neighbor and important asset to the community.
