Faced with closing its 57-acre landfill, Yarmouth turned to CDM to take the project beyond typical closure. CDM's landfill closure and reuse plan resulted in recreational opportunities and increased revenues. This was achieved by capping the landfill, developing a 9-hole golf course expansion to help offset long-term landfill monitoring and maintenance costs, and creating a mixed-use park for the community to enjoy. CDM also designed an advance treatment process for the adjacent sewage treatment plant to supply the water needed to irrigate the golf course expansion. Additionally, the landfill gas collection system was integrated below ground to blend into the site's new use.
CDM helped Yarmouth acquire first-ever funds (a no-interest $6 million loan) for landfill capping through the State Revolving Fund program, and secure other grant funds totaling more than $1.2 million.
This project won the 2000 Honor Award in Design from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers.
