For the city of Virginia Beach, CDM conducted a preliminary design study to upgrade and combine the city's water, wastewater, and 60-million-gallon-per-day raw water pumping station's supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA) into a common SCADA system. After more than 10 years of use, the existing SCADA systems were in need of upgrading, as the respective manufacturers were no longer supporting the hardware and software. In addition, each SCADA system was unique, adding to the cost of operations and operator training. To save on replacement cost, CDM's preliminary design report maximized the use of existing systems by recommending the reuse of current field remote terminal units and radio communications equipment. To reduce operational costs, CDM also recommend a common platform (hardware and software) for all three systems, unifying the operator interface.
