Upgrading Harvard’s Utilities and Infrastructure

Since 1993, CDM has provided consulting, engineering, and construction services to upgrade Harvard University's utilities and infrastructure. CDM has planned and designed chilled water, domestic water, fire services, sewer, storm drainage, electrical, steam, and telecommunications facilities. Also CDM has prepared plans, drawings and contract documents for bidding and construction of several different types of utilities projects. Contract documents for Harvard projects were specifically crafted to address requirements for maintaining use of the campus during construction.

Representative projects include:

  • Master planning for upgrading existing water, sewer, and stormwater infrastructure to serve new development of over 500,000 square feet of mixed-use space on Harvard property. The planning included a phased approach of multiyear construction for the demolition of existing facilities and construction of new facilities.
  • A stormwater storage plan for peak storm events in the Harvard Square area to alleviate neighborhood flooding during heavy rainfall. Alternatives were developed to meet city stormwater management goals while minimizing the impact on the Harvard campus.
  • New interior and exterior chilled water supply and return, drinking water, and fire water services, as well as steam electrical, and telecommunications facilities for multiple buildings across the Harvard campus.
