University Campus Building Decommissioning and Demolition Plans

CDM provided decommissioning and demolition (D&D) engineering services to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for the future site of the Student and Academic Services Building and Science Complex - Phase II projects. This project involved the demolition of three buildings: Chase Hall (cafeteria and classroom), Venable Hall (chemistry classrooms and research labs), and the Naval Armory (offices and training facilities), which range in age from 40 to 80 years with a total gross area of 205,000 square feet.

CDM provided the D&D plans, which included a recycling/salvage plan for building materials, a hazardous material abatement/removal plan (asbestos, mercury, toxic chemicals, and radiation), demolition plans and specifications for each building, phasing plans, construction cost estimates, and construction administration.

In addition to the D&D plans, CDM coordinated with the university's selected architectural firms designing the replacement facilities for potential reuse of material, equipment, and coordination of site utility tie-ins and relocations including power, telecommunications, steam, sanitary and storm sewers.
