Ulu Pandan Sewage Treatment Works

CDM designed an upgrade to the Ulu Pandan water reclamation plant that increased plant capacity by 75,000-m3/day (20 mgd), while also implementing an ultra-strict odor control system that reduced the buffer zone around the plant, thus releasing the surrounding land for residential and recreational uses. With subterranean features, the facility uses 50 percent of the space required for a conventional treatment works of the same capacity. The design included a two-stage aeration treatment process — the first such application of this process in Asia. Sludge is processed in a dedicated facility, thickened by centrifuges, conveyed to egg-shaped digesters, dewatered, and hauled off site. The two-stage process achieves a high level of treatment while the effluent quality is less affected by incoming loading fluctuations as in conventional processes. All facilities are enclosed and air is treated in three- and four-stage scrubber and carbon adsorption systems.

This project won the 2002 Honor Award in Design from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers.
