The CDM-led USAID/Environmental Health Project team worked in selected cities on the India Urban Child Health Program, a 5-year (2002-2006) effort that initiated sustained improvement in the health of poor children in urban slum areas. The first year focused on program development efforts in Indore, including a partnership with a non-governmental organization-community based organization consortium of five entities to implement child health interventions in 73 slums. The program included strengthening the capacity of partners and focusing on local- neonatal health interventions, improved birth practices, and hygiene improvement. The project emerged as a significant technical resource to the federal and state governments of India for the direction of its urban health programs. Using the Indore program as a model, additional sites for programming have been initiated in Jamshedpur, Agra, and other cities.
