Steel Plant Site Remediation

CDM conducted the remedial investigation/feasibility study for the 183-acre former steel plant Superfund site, and developed and oversaw the remedial design work plan for decontamination and demolition of the main plant buildings. The remedial design work plan included the plans and specifications, delineating the buildings to be demolished, materials to be removed, and guidance for disposal.

The plan detailed safe removal of asbestos-containing building materials, drums and wastes stored onsite, and isolated heavy deposits of lead dust in some of the buildings. CDM provided full-time resident and general engineering services to ensure proper project execution. CDM provided oversight of all building demolition activities, including demolition methods, dust control, backfilling of basements and pits, and salvage of scrap steel.  CDM's intense scrutiny of asbestos abatement activities to ensure detailed cost control and cost negotiation saved the client several million dollars.
