CDM managed the small village wastewater treatment systems project, a 1-year initiative with the overall goal of providing a comprehensive solution to mitigate water quality degradation, including uncontrolled discharge of untreated domestic wastewater, of the upper Litani River Basin and the West Bekaa Caza administrative district.
The project is part of a larger 3-year plan by USAID/Lebanon to "enhance Lebanon's overall well-being, as well as its competitiveness as a regional and global economic force." CDM identifed candidate municipalities to receive treatment from proposed wastewater treatment facilities, which are being designed by CDM under this program and constructed by USAID under a separate funding structure. The successful candidate municipalities have populations less than 15,000, are located within the Bekaa valley, and currently discharge untreated wastewater to a tributary of the Upper Litani River.
The first phase of the project involved identification, evaluation, shortlisting, and selection of the 15 viable municipalities and acceptance by those municipalities of the new wastewater facilities. The second phase involved the design and preparation of tender documents for constructing the new facilities.
