CDM assisted the Waltham School Department with the development and implementation of an environmental management system (EMS) at 13 Waltham public schools. CDM developed an EMS architecture that the school department can use to better manage their environmental matters and improve environmental performance. Two participants from each school joined the EMS team and attended 10 CDM-led training sessions on EMS implementation. The EMS includes:
The subsequent environmental management programs established include utilizing natural day lighting in the design of new schools, water conservation, toxic use reduction/pollution prevention, and chemical and waste management. This project is believed to be the first EMS implementation at a public school system in Massachusetts, and was closely monitored by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and the Massachusetts Attorney General's office.
