In a $2.7 million project, CDM helped Oberdorfer modernize its 300,000-square-foot, 1920s-era Syracuse foundry, one of the oldest aluminum foundries in the nation. The complete renovation of the facility streamlined operations, improved plant efficiency and production quality, and expanded the facility's capacity. The project dramatically improved equipment layout, facilities, and infrastructure systems to improve workflow. In addition to structural, electrical, and mechanical changes, CDM installed foundry equipment, including melt furnaces, pneumatic sand storage and conveyance systems, sand molding and handling systems, and metal casting and finishing lines.
The overhaul was completed on a fast-track, design-build schedule. During the heaviest months of construction, nearly 40 CDM employees worked onsite, installing equipment and making modifications while normal plant operations continued. The team completed the improvements 6 months ahead of schedule and under budget, meeting Oberdorfer's workflow, environmental, and quality goals, and expanding the plant's production capacity by a full 30 percent.
