CDM partnered with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to develop an environmental, health, and safety management system (EHS-MS) that will effectively and efficiently guide the institute's continuous improvement of environmental, health, and safety performance.
CDM helped MIT design and implement the comprehensive EHS-MS that engages the entire MIT community in minimizing adverse environmental, health, and safety impacts on campus and surrounding neighborhoods. While the management system successfully addresses a Department of Justice and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) consent decree, it goes beyond compliance requirements by minimizing the environmental, health, and safety effects of MIT's 11 million square feet of facility operations, fostering the independence of more than 3,400 research laboratories, and engaging a year-round student and faculty population in environmental stewardship.
Committed to excellence in academic research and environmental stewardship, MIT implemented an EHS-MS that supports the decentralized independence of academic laboratories and research endeavors while maintaining a high standard of centralized responsibility and accountability for compliance and continuous improvement in pollution prevention and EHS operations.
The institute's EHS-MS program is aimed at making the campus more sustainable and ensuring that MIT is a good neighbor to the businesses, residences, and environment that border its campus. Core program elements are discussed with students, professors, and researchers at orientation sessions, helping perpetuate this campus-wide commitment of environmental stewardship and carry it to other universities and countries via the institute's large international population. By developing a world-class EHS-MS, MIT continues to be a leader among higher education institutions and will serve as a role model for research institutions looking to implement similar programs.
