To provide an additional and highly effective barrier against microbial challenges, such as Cryptosporidium, CDM designed a 14.5-mgd-expandable to 21 mgd-microfiltration system. Engineered and constructed in 18 months, at a low capital cost of $7.3 million, the membrane system reduced staffing requirements, simplified process adjustments during changes in raw water quality, reduced chemical usage and residuals production, and minimized the treatment facility's footprint.
The new process reused existing ancillary facilities that required minimal modifications and resulted in significant savings in construction time and cost. Retiring the conventional process also allowed Manitowoc to convert the existing sedimentation tanks into additional clearwell storage, increasing their operational flexibility.
