Case Studies

Development of an Enterprise-Wide Geographic Information System

CDM assisted the city of Lewiston, Maine, with the implementation of an enterprise-wide geographic information system (GIS) environment. Lewiston's GIS spans approximately 10 city departments and is an integrated GIS solution linking the GIS with multiple city applications and processes.

Development of the new GIS program included implementation planning, budgeting, and scoping. CDM also provided:

  • Assistance with procurement of aerial base mapping to support GIS and engineering activities
  • Development of extensive GIS data layers, including sewer, stormwater, water, and other data layers.  These layers were used to support CSO and other sewer and water engineering projects.
  • Integration of GIS with the city's assessing, finance, utility billing, pavement management, and asset management systems
  • Implementation of a centralized GIS database and development of key GIS applications, including Web-based and field applications

With CDM's assistance, Lewiston's GIS evolved from a single-department implementation to a city-wide GIS environment that is used continuously by city departments and the public. This implementation is centralized around key applications, including Web-applications for general GIS use and customized field applications that allow city staff to access and edit GIS data in the field.
