CDM has provided comprehensive soil and groundwater remediation services at this site—contaminated with solvents and petroleum products—including initial site investigations, groundwater modeling, development of a closure-focused site management strategy, and remediation facilities design, construction, and operations. CDM implemented 30 dual vapor/groundwater extraction wells, two of the country's largest soil vapor extraction (SVE) systems, and a biologic water treatment system using parallel fluidized bed reactors.
Designed and built in 11 months, these systems were successful in removing an estimated 2.8 million pounds of contaminants in the first year of operation. Subsequent modifications have included closure of the SVE systems, addition of a denitrification system, two phytoremediation demonstration areas, and wellhead treatment of MTBE using advanced oxidation. The team has also pilot-tested hot-spot SVE and bioventing, and documented significant intrinsic biodegradation at the site. This project won a Nevada Consulting Engineers Council Engineering Excellence Award.
