Preserving Chicago's Harrison Park Athletic Field

In 1950, the Chicago Park District's Harrison Park Athletic Field became a new addition to the popular Harrison Park. However, during the early 1900s, before undergoing a transformation, the field was used as a stone quarry and then filled with construction debris and other materials.

Due to degradation and consolidation of the fill materials, a great deal of settlement has occurred-resulting in flooding after rain events. To help solve the field's settlement and flooding challenges, the Chicago Park District retained CDM to perform an onsite investigation of the field and review available historic site data. CDM prepared a new topographic survey of the athletic field and installed groundwater monitoring wells to assess the situation. Based on the results of the investigation, CDM prepared a geotechnical and engineering report that outlines a detailed alternatives analysis and cost comparison for various engineering strategies that will reduce the rate of settlement and ensure the park remains a recreational destination far into the future.
