European Union Integrated Water Resources Management System

The European Union Water Framework Directive (WFD) establishes a process for water resources management that incorporates existing legislation, while integrating modern water resources management and protection within a mandatory compliance timeline. Since 2003, CDM has been working with Ireland's Eastern River Basin District, which includes Dublin, on an innovative WFD project as part of Ireland's precedent-setting, nationwide water management program.

The program leverages cutting-edge water resources management techniques that comply with the WFD and are specific to Ireland's social, cultural, economic, and political factors. In addition to using hydrologic and related data to meet WFD goals, CDM has incorporated the strategic use of predictive tools, such as simulation models; powerful information management and Web-based technologies to deliver up-to-date information for politicians, water managers, and the public; and a first-of-its-kind integration of economic and scientific analyses to evaluate and select programs of measures. Throughout the course of the project, CDM is also applying a decision support system that involves all stakeholders, bringing interested parties into the regional water management process.

Please visit the Eastern River Basin District Project Web site for more information about Ireland's Eastern River Basin water management program.
