When more than 4.2 million Ethiopians faced serious food shortages due to drought conditions caused by a lack of significant rainfall in the North Wello and East Hararghe zones and in large areas west and south, USAID's Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance mobilized a CDM-led team that studied drought effects on water, sanitation, and health services, and recommended response measures. The Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance provided $1.3 million in grants to support emergency vaccine delivery, water/sanitation programs, nutritional assessments, supplementary feeding, and food storage in Ethiopia—playing a pivotal role in the U.S. foreign policy objective of promoting regional stability in the Greater Horn of Africa.
