In response to rapid economic growth, the Dublin City Council developed a 7-year Dublin City Development Plan. As part of this plan, the council commissioned CDM to lead a multidisciplinary team to complete an economic, environmental, and recreational study of Dublin Bay, including Ireland’s principal port, Dublin Port. The team looked at alternative uses of port lands, ways to improve the bay area, and preservation of the environment.
In efforts to ensure the integration of economic, cultural, and social needs of the region, stakeholders were heavily involved in the study. They provided information concerning the value of Dublin Bay and how it could be improved.
Study participants agreed that Dublin’s dramatic growth had been positive for the area, but that the quality of life still had room to improve. The port lands development was seen as an opportunity to improve lifestyle in the city center, with better community facilities and open space. The Dublin City Council has taken the report findings under advisement and is planning next steps for the future development of Dublin Bay.
