The Chicago Department of Environment set out to develop a strategy for collecting and recycling residents' electronic waste, such as televisions and computer monitors. As part of this initiative, CDM managed quarterly electronics recycling drives at various locations throughout the city, an effort that diverted 500,000 pounds of waste from landfills.
As part of one recycling event, the inner components of donated televisions and monitors were removed, and the casings were used as part of Chicago's Art in the Park exhibit previously on display at Grant Park. Usable items from the recycling drives were donated to nonprofit organizations throughout the city.
