Digital Mapping of Hong Kong Water System

CDM completed a computer-based mapping of Hong Kong's water system infrastructure for the Hong Kong Water Supplies Department (WSD). During the project, CDM staff converted more than 2,000 paper maps to an advanced digital mapping system (DMS) to help WSD streamline operations and manage capital assets.

A two-phase approach was used for the project: Phase I included analysis, system design, and final recommendations for the mapping software and hardware platform. Phase II included the use of AutoCAD to convert digital maps, including data attributes, and a quality control stage that utilized a sophisticated Visual Basic application. This application performed rigorous quality control checks on both pipe/node topology and attribute values, as well as attribute connectivity.  The installed DMS is being used to support operations, capital projects planning, and asset management, with potential links to other government departments' GIS maps and to WSD's hydraulic analysis software.
