CDM implemented site-specific beryllium decontamination procedures to reduce elevated beryllium levels at a former manufacturing site. Procedures included establishing clean areas in which to conduct decontamination of manufacturing and office equipment by high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuuming, constructing temporary polyethylene and wood structures for enclosure of items, separating decontamination of non-porous and porous items through use of HEPA vacuums to collect "removable" surface dust, and washing with surfactants and liquids to remove "fixed" dust decontamination. Decontamination verification included wipe tests, with at least one sample to represent every 200 square feet of surface, and chemical analysis of the wipe samples to determine decontamination success. Decontaminated items were transferred to a new facility.
