Landfill Gas Management

Landfill gas is generated during the natural process of bacterial decomposition of organic material contained in municipal solid waste landfills. If not properly managed, landfill gas has the potential to adversely affect the health and safety of the public, as well as the environment. Three specific contaminant issues are of major concern: subsurface migration, surface emissions/air pollution, and odor problems.

CDM has designed and implemented landfill gas management systems that remove, treat, and/or convert gas to a useful form of energy. Our services include soil gas surveys, monitoring well installation, and sampling and analysis. We have designed and provided services during construction of gas extraction systems and barriers for mitigation control. In addition, CDM’s proprietary computer model, Landfill Gas Manager (LFGAS), simplifies analysis of gas generation over the life of the landfill based on size and waste characteristics. LFGAS supports compliance-related efforts and can determine the viability and cost effectiveness of energy recovery.
