Martin County Airport Wins Noise Abatement Award for CDM-Led Study
March 04, 2009
MARTIN COUNTY, FLORIDA—Martin County Airport/Witham Field recently won the first annual Noise Abatement Award from the Florida Airports Council for successful noise reduction. This award recognizes a project that reduces the noise impact of aircraft operations on neighboring communities by modifying airplane departure procedures.
This collaborative award-winning noise abatement project was led by CDM with assistance from subconsultants HMMH and Hanson Professional Services, as well as additional support from the Airport Noise Advisory Committee, and Fair Wind Air Charter, who donated the aircraft, fuel, and pilots for the study.
CDM has been assisting the county with a number of responsible growth-related projects, including a business development plan, airport master plan, and noise study. The general aviation facility—which primarily serves business flights and general aviation aircraft—boasts three runways, four taxiways, an air traffic control tower, and airport administration and maintenance facilities. The flexible business development plan and noise study and abatement program are essential to Martin County Airport’s future success.
CDM’s “real world” site and engineering analysis is identifying general aviation and non-aviation-based growth opportunities, while the accompanying noise study and abatement program ensure that the airport’s growth blends with the surrounding community and addresses residents’ concerns about noise. To date, takeoff noise has been reduced by an average of 5 to 7 decibels.
Florida Airports Council is an association of publicly owned and operated airports, as well as professionals and experts in the fields of airport planning, design, and development that support the airport industry in Florida.
