CDM Workshop at IWA Congress Forecasts Future of Water Industry

BEIJING, CHINA—CDM organized and hosted a significant full-day workshop on "Cities of the Future: Urban Sustainability and Water" at the biennial International Water Association (IWA) World Water Congress 2006 held 10-14 September in Beijing, China.
The workshop, as part of the larger Congress technical program, featured distinguished speakers from the USA, China, Japan, Korea, Sweden, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
The interdisciplinary workshop explored emerging, visionary concepts related to urban sustainability and sustainability in the water environment, treating them as an integrated whole. With urban waters as a focal point, the workshop examined the links between urban water quality and hydrology, landscape, and the broader concepts of green cities and smart growth.
Attended by more than 100 World Water Congress participants, the workshop featured opening remarks by CDM Public Services Group President Paul Brown, who chaired the session. IWA Executive Director Paul Reiter delivered a closing address that focused on the way forward for the water industry.
Among the speakers participating in the workshop was Mr. Khoo Teng Chye, Chief Executive of the Public Utilities Board, the national water agency in Singapore. CDM has provided environmental planning and engineering services to PUB since the early 1980s. CDM most recently designed the innovative Marina Barrage, a US$200 million undertaking that will provide flood control, water supply, and water recreation opportunities in downtown Singapore, when completed in 2007. At the IWA Congress, IWA's Reiter announced a new partnership with PUB Singapore, in which the two institutions will collaborate to sustain innovation in water.
