CDM Provides Geotechnical Expertise for New Berlin International Airport

September 06, 2006

BERLIN, GERMANY—CDM is providing comprehensive geotechnical services to the BFS Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld GmbH for the €1.7 billion (US$2.2 billion), 5-year expansion of Berlin's Schönefeld Airport, which will be known as the Berlin-Brandenburg-International (BBI) airport. When completed in 2011, BBI will be Europe's largest civil airport, accommodating 22 to 25 million passengers per year, with expansion capacity of up to 40 million passengers.

CDM's major task is minimizing the foundation risk and providing for the use of cost-effective foundation and construction methods. In addition, CDM is providing geotechnical specialists to address myriad geotechnical challenges at the complex site and is responsible for geotechnical quality assurance and the management of all geotechnical interfaces, including risk management of the separate projects.

The new airport will be equipped with gates, runways, and taxiways capable of handling even the largest jumbo aircraft, including the new Airbus A-380. The airport will also be integrated into extensive road and rail infrastructure to allow efficient transportation to the city center and the rest of Germany, and a sophisticated underground station will allow high-speed railway service to Berlin's city center.

The existing Schönefeld facility is currently one of Berlin's three airports. Operations from all three are being consolidated into BBI to create the capital's new international airport, improving the region's air transportation, enhancing links to rail and road service, and creating almost 40,000 additional jobs by 2012.

CDM is a consulting, engineering, construction, and operations firm delivering exceptional service to public and private clients worldwide.
