CDM Launches Engineers Without Borders Program and Becomes Platinum Sponsor

December 11, 2007

CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS—CDM, the global consulting, engineering, construction, and operations firm, is a platinum sponsor of Engineers Without Borders-USA (EWB-USA), a non-profit humanitarian organization that partners with developing communities to help meet their pressing needs for clean water, sanitation, or other life-sustaining systems. CDM's EWB program contributes to the ongoing success of this important international organization through both financial donations and volunteer outreach.

"CDM's support of EWB is one more way in which we can demonstrate our commitment to leading by example and making the world a better place," said CDM's John L. Roberts, P.E., BCEE, executive vice president. "In addition, our program serves as a powerful recruiting tool; further strengthens employee engagement and retention; and provides excellent opportunities for our volunteers to build teamwork, project management, and leadership skills."

CDM employees participate in EWB-USA community service projects through a unique CDM grant program that matches volunteer service with grants to help cover travel and other expenses related to EWB projects. To date, 30 CDM employees have helped communities in the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, and Togo. The projects are often technically simple-digging ditches, laying pipes, or even suggesting changes in behavior-but can have a huge impact on quality of life. As just one example, in the village of El Rosario, Honduras, which had suffered from a severe water shortage, EWB volunteers laid perforated pipes in a bed of sand and gravel beneath and beside an existing springbox. The new pipes captured the water leaking from the springbox and diverted it to the existing water system, doubling the village's water supply.

Since its founding in 2000, EWB projects have improved the lives of more than 600,000 people in 41 countries.

CDM is a consulting, engineering, construction, and operations firm delivering exceptional service to public and private clients worldwide.
