CDM Pitches in for 40th Annual Earth Day Events
April 13, 2010
CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS—An estimated 150 volunteers from CDM's world headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts, will proudly participate in a series of local public service activities to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, taking place the fourth weekend in April. The scheduled events include:
- CRWA Charles River Cleanup—On Saturday, April 24, a team of approximately 30 CDM volunteers will adopt a stretch of the Charles River shoreline near the Longfellow Bridge as part of the Charles River Cleanup (organized by the Charles River Watershed Association [CRWA], in conjunction with the Charles River Conservancy). The spring trash-and litter-removal benefits CRWA, spruces up the river, and draws public attention to our urban river resource.
- Cambridge Science Festival—For the third consecutive year, CDM is a Titanium Sponsor of the Cambridge Science Festival. On Saturday, April 24, from noon to 4:00 p.m., CDM will host two interactive and educational booths at the carnival, held at the Cambridge Public Library. "Whaddaya Know About Your H2O" is a hands-on, drinking water purification demonstration where children use everyday items to clean dirty water. "Taste and See" features a blind taste test between bottled water and local tap water.
- CRWA Run of the Charles Canoe Race—On Sunday April 25, nine CDM teams will participate in the annual 24-mile Run of the Charles canoe relay race, organized by the CRWA. Each team consists of 10 paddlers who will take turns tackling a 5- to 6-mile stretch of the river, beginning in Needham and finishing at Herter Park on Soldiers Field Road. One of the largest employee outings of the year, the race will culminate in a barbeque and river festival at Herter Park.
"These and many other Cambridge-area community events are organized through 'CDM Cares'—a Cambridge-based office initiative that supports volunteer leaders, provides company resources, and presents volunteer opportunities," states Ken Page, CDM senior vice president and internal sustainability operations leader. "The participation of CDM volunteers in these events proudly illustrates our firm's core values and commitment to environmental stewardship and quality of life for local communities."
Adds John Broderick, volunteer and outreach coordinator at the Charles River Conservancy, "CDM has been rolling up their sleeves to join us for the Charles River Cleanup for 4 years now, and they've always done a terrific job. It's good to see an organization, dedicated to environmental improvement, joining us in this tangible effort to improve our streams, parks, and community."
