Award Title:
2008 AAEE Grand Award - Small Projects

Jordan has a goal of reusing 100 percent of its wastewater. The groundbreaking Reuse for Industry, Agriculture, and Landscaping project, a comprehensive nationwide water reclamation and watershed management program, has set the model for achieving this goal.

Multiple industrial, agricultural, and urban landscaping projects have demonstrated water conservation and wastewater reuse best practices that can be duplicated throughout Jordan in the future. Cooperation among government, business, and community organizations built stakeholder buy-in that will ensure continued progress and knowledge and technology transfer.

Project benefits:

  • Farmers doubled their crop yields and tripled their incomes by irrigating with reclaimed water
  • Residents enjoy landscaped parks irrigated with reclaimed water in formerly barren areas
  • Businesses profit from immediate savings in freshwater, expenses, and materials through wastewater recycling, pollution prevention, and environmental management programs
  • Citizens and the environment benefit from freshwater conservation, pollution prevention, and beneficial water reclamation
  • Neighboring countries prosper as engineers across the region learn from and replicate project approaches
